Pocketed Peanut Profits On Adobe

With resistance level @ around $40.60, i set a contigent order for profit level if it breaks above $40. Truly on 2nd May, it released news to launched an alliance with cellphone handset and operating system makers aimed at boosting mobile Web surfing by making it easier for video and animated content to be seen across multiple mobile platforms. With DJ going up as well, the stock price closed at $40.38, my order triggered at $40.08.

A profit of $150.09

China Medical Tech - The Formation of Triangle

This stock caught my eyes when screening for 4G1R signal.

Downwards trendline drawn by connecting the higher low level at $46
Support level of $36 thereabout.

Looks like a formation of descending triangle, this will be confirmed if it breaks $36. If yes, this stock will be trending to the Downside. Added this stock into watchlist to monitor for the chance to SHORT.

Trading rules reminded by my sifu yesterday :-

1) If trending based on chart formation, do not enter the trade before the confirmation appears.

2) Even when 4R1G signal appears, if MACD shown divergence, give this stock a miss.

Pocketed Profits for Apple but Penalty for Chatterm

AAPL

Missed to take profits last week when Apple went up to $169. Yesterday the price went up higher to $172, though there might be chance to ride the upwards trend, but risk is there too. If it fall, it could be sharp. I reckoned it was a decent profit hence I get out of the ship first.

Cut loss level was triggered yesterday after the price hit $72. The comfort of contigent order has allowed me to stay discipline and admit this was a wrong trade.

My sifu has taught me to keep losses small. When trade is correct ensure the wins are much more than when u lost a trade.

Consumer-goods maker Chattem Inc (CHTT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a 9 percent rise in first-quarter profit as the brands it bought from Johnson & Johnson (JNJ.N: Quote, Profile, Research) continued to propel margins despite a weak retail environment, sending its shares up as much as 7 percent.

The company, which makes and sells over-the-counter drugs, toiletries, cosmetics and dietary supplements, also reaffirmed its fiscal 2008 profit outlook, citing continued growth of its key brands and the success of the new products it launched under existing labels.
Chattem has posted strong results each quarter since it shook hands with Johnson & Johnson in late 2006 to buy five of the pharmaceutical giant's brands.

Losing Trades - Putting aside Earnings Gapping Method

My options learning journey has not been profitable. One of the reason was not able to anticipate the direction of Dow Jones correctly hence placed the wrong trade. Past few months have been trying out the earnings gapping method but has not been rewarding. Since now I have my US Market screening software, I shall make use of the screening results to aid me in stock selection. Earnings Gapping method... will put aside for now.

As mentioned in my previous post, here's my losing trades :-

1) C, Citigroup

Current Price 54.49
Loses: ($330.00)

On 21th Dec 2006 bought 3 contracts of C FEB 2007 55 Call.
Stock price was at 54.55.
RSI indicator was high at 80 level and MACD lines above zero value.

Anticipated the earnings results will be good and finance sector was the movers and hence bought a Feb call at strike price 55.
The stocks price went up to 55.88 on 28th Dec and thereafter has been declining till now. I did not exit from the trade to take the minimal profit. Currently RSI and MACD is showing a downtrend and price action below the 22 dma. 3 more weeks before expiration, should i hold on to wait for any rebound ?

1) CIT, CIT Group

Current Price 58.64
Loses: ($450.00)

On 16th Jan 2006, i short 2 contracts of CIT FEB 55 Call.
Stock price was at 54.64.
RSI was sloping below 50 level and MACD histogram was below zero value.

My mistakes:

Never short a position when the stocks are on a uptrend.
- price action was above 22 dma then.
- RSI though slope down from 70 to 50 but bear in mind stocks will usually test this level and rebound off.
- MACD lines were above zero value, indicating a up trend.

With all these reason, I should not have short at all. If I would have call, profits is inside my pocket now as curent stock price at 58.57.

Continue To Update My Paper Trades on US Options

It has been quite sometime I did not update my observations & paper trades that I have put in. Spent past month to learn basic T.A chart reading. Primarily, I learn to use MACD , RSI and MA to identify the stocks trend.

Last Week I placed some paper trades based on what I have learnt. Some winning some losing.

Winning Trades:

1) CHL, China Mobile

On 17th Jan 2007, Stock price open at 44.19. From RSI indicator it has slightly break the 50 level and MACD lines cut each other and moves up above 0 value with a tiny blue bar. Anticipated an uptrend movement and bought 2 contracts of CHL MAR 45 Call at $2.45 per contract

Today, on 24th Jan, Stock Price at $50.15, tentatively profit of $750 a 153% ROI.

2) STX, Seagate

On 17th Jan 2007, Stock price open at 27.14. From RSI indicator was at 60 and MACD going to cut each other. Though the MACD was below 0 level, with 07' Q2 results going to be released on 23th Jan 06, I anticipated good earnings and bought 3 contracts of STX MAR 27.5 Call at $1.35 per contract. Earnings results was good "Seagate just delivered the industry's first $3 billion quarter, and 30% growth over our year-ago quarter" and the stock price gapped up from $26.18 to $27.99.

Current Stock Price at $28.40, Tentatively profit of $75 of 20% ROI. Will monitor closely as this is still not a confirm winning trade.

1) Goldman Sachs , GS ( Finance Sector)

Charts:
- above 22dma since 12th Sep, uptrend
- current Stock price at 205USD, consider historical high
- RSI around 60
- Curent IV 30.04 ( towards the high end)

Comments: Watch out for MACD indiactors to determine the stock directions.

2) Lehman Bros, LEH ( Finance Sector)

Previous Earnings on 13th Sep

Charts:
- currently above 22dma since 6th Dec
- current Stock price at 77.03USD, historical high at 78USD
- RSI moving towards 60
- MACD lines cutting each other now
- Current IV 29.61 ( towards the high end)

Comments: If go above USD 78 breaks resistance level, the SP will continue uptrend. Look out for MACD signal too to further determine it will moves in which direction.

3) Adobe Systems, ADBE ( Software Sector)

Previous Earnings on 14th Sep ( gapped up from> 33 to 37)

Charts:
- currently below 22dma since 28 Nov
- current Stock price at 38.88USD, historical high at 42.55USD
- currently testing the 78.2% support level

Comments: Testing the dma 20 lines now, if go above,the SP will go up, ready to LONG CALL. Watch out forMACD too.

Comments: Watch out the movements, likely to movedowntrend after USD 17.5 level. If earnings results good, it will help the SP to rebound.

Previous Earnings on 20th Sep ( price did not gap but consistently uptrend for 1.5 mths)

- currently just above 22dma since 5th Dec

- MACD lines cutting each other now.
- Current IV 29.14 ( middle range)

Comments: Prepare to LONG CALl if the MACD line cutsup. If SP drops below USD 74, time to short.

Previous Earnings on 21th Sep (price decreased with a long black candle, but thereafter SP moving uptrend for 1.5 mths)

- currently just dropped below 22dma since 8th Dec

- RSI moving at 50
- MACD lines cutting each other soon, seems like going down to test support level.

Previous Earnings on 28th Sep ( gapped up from> 86USD to 102USD, thereafter uptrend till highest 141.56USD)

- Current IV 48.95 ( middle range, highest at 65)

Comments: If Monday forms a white candle and MACD slope up, get ready to LONG CALL.

My Wins & Losses for 17th Oct Earning Week

On 17th Oct, I updated 7 trades that I have placed and here's the results!

1) Motorola, Inc (MOT)
On 16th Oct Bought 1 Contract of Nov 25 Call Options @ 1.90
On 18th Oct Sold 1 Contract of Nov 25 Call Options @ 0.40
Total Loss: $179.91

Q3 earnings was bad which causes the share prices to drop by $3. To cut loss, I sold off the position immediately.

Shares of Motorola Inc. fell almost 5% Wednesday after the technology giant reported third-quarter profit dropped by nearly half from a year ago, when it had a large one-time gain, and sales rose less than expected.
The world's No. 2 maker of wireless phones also issued a weaker sales forecast range for the current quarter.
Shares of Motorola (MOT) , which hit a five-year high on Oct. 13, fell $1.21 to $23.64 in trading volume that was four times the stock's daily average.
Motorola said late Tuesday that third-quarter profit fell 45% to $968 million, or 39 cents a share, from $1.75 billion, or 69 cents, a year earlier, when the company booked a $1.3 billion gain from asset sales.

2) Citigroup Inc (C)

On 19th Oct Sold 10 Contracts of Nov 52.5 Call Options @ 0.05
Total Loss: $180.01

Missed analysts forecast and reported a negative results. Share priced dropped immediately! As the call options I bought was at $52.5 even if it rebound the target is still far. The only thing to do is to cut loss.

Citigroup earned $5.5 billion, or $1.10 a share, against $7.14 billion, or $1.38, in the year-earlier period. From continuing operations, earnings were $1.06 against 97 cents. Revenue was $21.42 billion versus $21.5 billion. The consensus estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call were $1.03 on revenue of $21.63 billion. In the largest segment, global consumer, earnings rose 17% on 4% higher revenue. In corporate and investment banking, earnings fell 4% on 6% lower revenue. The shares closed Wednesday at $50.19, up 14 cents.

On 16th Oct 2006, the stock price was at $74.32 placed contigency to buy 2 contract OTM 75 Call Nov@ $4.00, order executed on 17th Oct.

On 24th Oct Sold 2 Contracts of Nov 75 Call Options @ 6.50
Total Profit: 470.06

It was a unintentional mistake to sell off this trade as Apple reported postive earnings and share price has been moving up to $82. Was trying out to set the "thriling" sell and on 24th put up a thrilling stop of 80 cents. Unfortunately, Dow Jones was moving down that day and options moves down quickly and hit the trilling stop and sold my postions. AAPL was at $81 and my profit was then slashed!

The Company posted revenue of $4.84 billion and net quarterly profit of $546 million, or $.62 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $3.68 billion and net profit of $430 million, or $.50 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 29.2 percent, up from 28.1 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 40 percent of the quarter's revenue.

"This strong quarter caps an extraordinary year for Apple. Selling more than 39 million iPods and 5.3 million Macs while performing an incredibly complex architecture transition is something we are all very proud of," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Looking forward, 2007 is likely to be one of the most exciting new product years in Apple's history."

"We are pleased to have finished the year with over $10 billion in cash and to have increased annual revenue by $11 billion in the last two years," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's CFO. "Looking ahead to the first fiscal quarter of 2007, we expect revenue of $6.0 to $6.2 billion and earnings per diluted share of $.70 to $.73."

Losing Trade: Genentec Inc (DNA)

Despite good earnings results released on 10th Oct 2006, the share price did not increase over my strike price of $85 as anticipated. On the contrary, it dropped below $83 due to the sales of few drugs fall below expectation. On 11th & 12th Oct, Dow Jones rally but DNA continued it's downtrend movements, it cautioned me that i have to cut loss and exit this trade. I can no longer wait & hold also because the Oct Call Options will expire on 19th, with time decay factor, my Oct options value will not increase any further.

However, I am still holding on to my Nov call for DNA as fundamentally this company is still sound. Confidence of investor might return and push up the stock price and minimize my loss for this trade.

Shares of drug developer Genentech Inc. fell slightly Wednesday after the company reported a profitable third-quarter but missed Wall Street expectations on several key cancer drugs.
The stock shed $1.19 to reach $84.72 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.

The San Francisco-based company posted a 58 percent jump in profit after the closing bell Tuesday, beating Wall Street estimates for a second consecutive quarter, this time by 8 cents a share. The stock price took a negative turn specifically over concerns from weaker-than-expected sales of Avastin, Herceptin, Rituxan and Tarceva.

But some analysts reaffirmed positive ratings for the company, with several brushing off the missed expectations on individual cancer drug sales and pointing out stronger-than-expected sales of macular degeneration drug Lucentis.
"Another weak top-line quarter obscures the strength of Genenetech's underlying business and we continue to believe the company can deliver stable growth," said Morgan Stanley analyst Dr. Steven Harr, in a note to investors.

Winning Trade: Infosys Technologies Limited (INFY)

Earning results released on 10/10/2006 after trading day. The earnings was good, its Second quarter revenues at $ 746 million, up 42.4% from the corresponding quarter last fiscal . With the fantastic results, the share price did not gap up greatly as compared to RIMM. After holding the positions for 2 days it did not rebound much though Dow Jones rally +90 points. Put up a contigency sell once it hits $52.

Position was sold the next day when I woke up with $285.06 profits.

1) Genentech and CGI Pharmaceuticals Enter Into Exclusive Global Strategic Alliance for Potential Products in Multiple Oncology and Autoimmune Indications.

Genentech makes an upfront payment to CGI of $25 million and gained the licsence to discover, develop & market small molecules. On 3th Oct, it was stated under watch list in US stock market.

2) Genentech, Inc. announced on 4th Oct, the publication of data from the two randomized, controlled pivotal Phase III clinical trials of LUCENTIS(TM) (ranibizumab injection) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

3) Genentech results to include strong initial Lucentis sales, a treatment for the leading cause of blindness in the elderly.

Losing Trade: Pepsi Bottling ( PBG)

Last week, Pepsi caught my eye while I was browsing through the earnings list for week of 2nd Oct 2006. The Q3 earnings results was released on 2nd Oct 2006.

Reasons to enter:

1) Looking through the chart, it was showing a uptrend movements since June 2006. The stock price has moved consistent up from $30 to $35 over the past 3 months. I anticipaed it as a strong signal that the earnings results will be a good one.

2) Morning Star Analyst report stated it's fair value at $34, consider sell value at $42. With the CEO, John Cahill resigned as the CEO & chairman it did not struck the board of director and successor Eric Foss with decades years of experience was anticipated to ensure a smooth transistion. Hence, it shouldn't have impact the growth of the company & confidence of people investing in Pepsi.

My Paper Trade:

1) Bought 4 Contracts of Oct Call Options @ 35, Near the Money
2) Bought 4 Contracts Nov Call Options @ 35, Near the Money

Unfortunately, the results was not fantastic, up 1% and worst of all, stock price gap down from $35 to $32, my options value dropped to zero value in 2 days time. Despite US market rally on the remaining days of the week, Pepsi has no sign of rebound. With disappointment, I guess I have to wait helplessly for Oct Option to expire worthlessly and incur the loss of $440 and pray for Nov options to regain some value and minimize my loss.

My reasons for buying 2 different months was to experiment the effects of near month & far month options movement. At this time, Nov options lose more $ than Oct options.

Earnings results trade for 10/10/2006

Out of the 5 companies I shortlisted in my previous post only the above 2 shown a uptrend from the charts, plus postive growth anticipated. Paper trade placed yesterday for Oct & Nov call options for the same strike price, reason being to experiement the effect movements between near & far month options. One more week before results announce, will monitor the news as both stock prices dropped today.

My next immediate step in doing research on US market will be to look back at the month of September which companies have projected good earnings results and strong forcast of the growth in the next 3 months.

Conclusion drawn on why RIMM trade profitted

From the TA chart, the support level of $85 was not break over the past 6 monhs and it is showing a up trend. Moreover, being a fundamental sound company with good results anticipated, it should break the resistance to form a new high.

Moving forward, over the weekend I did a quick browse on the earnings calender for week of 9th october 2006. Below are some companies which I think worth deeper research on, will update again if it worth putting trade on.

How did RIMM & my trade fares?

Research In Motion Ltd. shares surged as much as 20% early Friday after the company issued better-than-expected quarterly results and a bullish forecast on strong demand for its newest BlackBerry products.
RIM (RIMM) (RIM) shares traded as high as $104 on heavy volume after the Canadian pioneer of wireless e-mail devices said late Thursday profit rose 27% and sales rose by more than a third in its fiscal second quarter.

Very excited and happy that my first piece of research turned out to be what I have anticipated. On 28th Sep, I put on a naked call Oct @85 and bought 3 contracts when market opened in US early trading hour. Next morning I quickly read the news and realised RIMM indeed surge up to $101 during late trading hour but closed at $86. This resulted my options trade to experience a roller coaster day and ended up losing $30 instead. I was quite sad that I missed the chance to take profits when it hits the $100 range. An hour ago, I log in to optionsxpress wanted to set contingency on my naked call, but, to my horror suprise, the stock price was at $102.92!!! My profits of my trade was at $3900+ !!!

As I am not good in TA and doesn't what caused the stock to rebound upwards, I decided to run with the profits first and do my analysis later. I wanted to set contigency at $100 level in case the stock continues moving upwards but I don't know how to put on the trade. In the end, I sold to market immediately and mins later the order was executed.

Total Net profit of $3,989.93 =)

It's also a pity that I did not put in CRB trade, if not, I am able to see how the strategy works and how much profits it will bring in.

Overall it's a nice feeling but I have to be sure what have I done correct, what lesson was learned during these 2 days. This weekend I will discuss with my teacher and update again.
